Chapter 15

The downstairs lounge in the guest house is large. The windows are wide, and the plush drapes of the deepest emerald are still open at nine o'clock in the evening. It has views onto a pretty garden at the back of the house and the street out front. But it's dark now and all Anna can see as she sits with her laptop beside the fireplace is an indigo sky, trees, and bushes in shadow. The fire isn't lit, but she imagines the room will come alive in the winter evenings when it is. She wonders if she'll ever see the room like that.

There are very few words on the document she is writing and so far, all her ideas for the article stay firmly in her head. Beth, Jenny, and Finn are three people she'd love to interview because of their travels between a big city and a small town. Both Finn and Jenny grew up in Northampton. Jenny went to LA and Finn was a doctor in New York. Their stories will make the feature come to life.

She wonders how Jenny will feel about answering questions, and she wonders if she can get up the nerve to probe Beth, knowing that it was the love of her life that brought her here in the first place, only to lose her to cancer and then stay on because of the bonds that tied her to Northampton.

“Still working?” Finn's voice is full of enthusiasm. He'll be an easy person to interview; he doesn't appear to have baggage.

“Well, if you can call it that.” Anna lowers the top of her laptop and sits back in the easy chair. She'd been using a side table as a desk. “I need you.”

Finn drops into the armchair on the opposite side of the fireplace. “I like the sound of that. What do you need me for?”

“I want your story,” says Anna. “I want to know how the small town boy made it in the big city, and would you ever have come back had it not been for personal reasons? I mean, when your father is better, will you return to New York?”

“That has to be a yes. I miss the city, my friends, even my apartment.”

“Who do you live with?”

“I'm single,” he says. “I live on my own, but I've got someone living there, renting, and looking after the place for me. Well, I hope she is anyway. My cousin Issy, another small town girl.”

“They get everywhere.”

“Tell you what, scoop, how about a night off? There's a band that plays at Charlotte's once in a while. They're really good, and Charlotte's is a nice bar, about the only place people our age can go for fun.”

“Tonight? Now?” says Anna, brightening up.

“Why not? You can buy me a drink, and I can answer your burning questions.”

“Deal. Should I change?”

“Grab a jacket. I'll wait for you here.”
